How to make Peanut Animals

As we love to use natural or “nature’s” material for arts and crafts, making Peanut Animals is one of our favourites!

Step 1

Here’s what you need to make Peanut Animals:

  • A bag of peanuts in their shell
  • Water colour
  • Marker pens
  • A few pieces of coloured paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Cardboard, some playdough or blue tack (to help the animals stand) or wooden sticks for the butterflies

Step 2

You may wish to help younger children with cutting out the shapes. But let them try on their own even if it’s not perfect. Now, let’s get started!

  1. Choose some nicely shaped peanuts
  2. Colour your animals with the water colours (eg. pink for pig, brown for dog, white for cat, etc
  3. Outline the ears on the coloured paper and cut it out. Remember you need some spare paper at each end to stick the paper to the peanut
  4. Draw on the eyes, and mouth, or whiskers, etc
  5. Glue the ears on
  6. You might have to cut off a bit from the bottom of the peanut, then use the playdough or bluetack to help the animal stand on a square piece of card board

For the butterflies:

  1. Use markers to draw on the stripes (eg. the black head and eyes and mouth)
  2. Cut out the wings and glue them on the peanut
  3. Cut off a small piece from the bottom of the peanut, and place butterfly on the wooden stick (skewers)

Voila! These peanut butterflies will be a lovely decoration, for example, in a potted plant on your window sill.
